Michele Martinelli: "SOLVAYLAND" >> Parco Parri, Pool skate

01 A skull of a Roman woman dating back to the 1st century AD found by the archaeological excavations carried out at the site of San Gaetano, Vada, Italy 2021.

02 Avenue Ernesto Solvay, The tree-lined road leading to the main entrance of the Solvay chemical industry, Rosignano Solvay, Italy 2019.

03 A bather relaxes in the turquoise waters of Rosignano Solvay, in locality Spiagge Bianche (white beaches)Italy 2019. The white Caribbean-like beach washed by a turquoise sea of Rosignano Solvay is identified with the name Spiagge Bianche. These several kilometers long beaches are the product of a century of chemical discharges that reach the sea through a ditch in which a milk-colored stream flows containing the substances spilled from the factory.

04 A worker inside the Locatelli salt pans, Saline di Volterra, Italy 2021. The former state salt pans, today Locatelli Saline di Volterra have a centuries-old history. In the factory the salt considered the purest in Italy is produced, it mainly has food and zootechnical purposes.
In this area over the years the activities related to the extraction of rock salt have created a stable economy and hundreds of jobs, however with the arrival of more and more advanced technologies, as in every sector, the workers in recent decades have considerably reduced.

05 The beach of the bathing establishments of the Circolo Canottieri Solvay, in Punta Lillatro, Rosignano Solvay, 2021. The Solvay Rowing Club was the bathing complex where the factory employees and workers spent the summer season. The bathroom was divided into two areas, strictly separated, intended one for the workers and one for the empolese. The two areas were served by a shed for the shelter of boats, and each had a room used as a bar, a dance floor and numerous wooden cabins. The bathroom used was more refined and had a rotunda on stilts, according to the fashion of the time.

06 The main plant of the Solvay chemical industry seen from the Spiagge Bianche of Rosignano Solvay, Italy 2019. Solvay has been at the center of social contrasts for many years now, as some consider the factory harmful to the environment and the health of citizens; however, others show appreciation and devotion for those who, at the beginning of the '900, favored the growth of the town and created job positions (back in the “boom years”, the plant had more than 4 thousand employees, nowadays they're about 600).
